Desert Sun is a "recreated reprint" of a piece originally created in April of 1984 when Estella Banks was a senior in high school at a Department of Defense Dependent School (DoDDS) in Iwakuni, Japan. Although the original piece survived multiple moves, it was not impervious to environmental elements.

The piece includes a quote by Khalil Gibran, whose writings intrigued Ms. Banks, particularly "The Prophet."
